Bible Bill: The Gospel Musical

MAA & PAA Theatre crafts tight, fun stories of Alberta history, using the subjects’ own words.  This year, we offer  the larger than life premier, preacher and principal William Aberhart, in a new gospel-flavoured musical.  Come Back to the Bible Hour with us.

Lobster Alice

In 1946, surrealist painter Salvador Dali travelled to Hollywood to collaborate with a Walt Disney animator and his secretary on a short musical film. It did not go well. This play is a speculation on those six weeks, and explores the nature of Art, Passion and Love in a hilarious, brilliant manner. Sparkling dialogue and outrageous characters inhabit this comedy, brought to you by the company that produced previous Fringe hits “Going to St. Ives” and “Shipwrecked!

John D  Huston in ScrewtapeJohn D. Huston,(Kind Hearts and Coronets – 5 stars, Underneath the Lintel – 5 stars, Shylock – 4 stars) returns in SCREWTAPE based on C.S. Lewis’s darkly funny “anti-sermon” The Screwtape Letters and Screwtape Proposes a Toast. Screwtape, a Senior Devil in Hell’s Lower-Archy, dictates a toast for the upcoming Tempters’ Training College graduation, while multitasking advice to his incompetent nephew, Wormwood, a policy paper deadline and his own transformation into a centipede.

David Belke’s 25th consecutive Fringe premiere. Writer Neil Cook is stuck. Committed to finishing a novel as part of his University residency, he can’t get a word on paper. However once he becomes convinced that the former girlfriend he suffered a messy break up with is in fact his literal muse and the source of all his inspiration, he has no choice but to try and woo her back. A comic tale of art, interrelationship and the eternal courting of inspiration.

David Belke’s very first Fringe play returns polished up for the 21st Century and set to music. An exiled princess assumes the role of an outlaw in order to find her missing brother and reclaim the throne. All that stands in her way are a sinister sorcerer, an earnest assassin, a unbeatable swordsman and a con man with romance in his heart. A swashbuckling musical epic about love, lies, swords, sorcery and other sleights of hand.

The Campers of Camp Squealy-Moo are back and this time they need help to earn their “I Really Dig Dinosaurs ” badge. Join our prehistoric performance full of songs, stories and non-stop adventures about dinosaurs. Maximum energy, maximum participation and maximum fun for preschoolers to age 10 and families. (45 minutes) Produced by Kompany Family Theatre.

Anansi and Friends!

image (5)Three ‘Story Theatre’ folktales from Africa recreated through storytelling, acting and music by 20 exuberant, youthful actors but the group that brought you Trolls and Tribulations at the Fringe 2013. Produced by Caraway Story Theatre

Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock from Ghana, the Legendary Ashanti trickster gets himself in and out and in trouble again.

Chinelo,  a quest-tale from Nigeria, an orphan girl’s journey from slavery to self-worth, includes evil step-sister, eccentric old woman and talking gourds.

The Animals Dance for Water, perhaps the original South African version of the American Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby, complete with fetchingly-disguised tortoise in a wig, and a herd of thirsty, stomp-dancing animals.

Anne of Green Gables

image (6)The Youth Performance Troupe, who performed Charlie Brown to sold-out audiences at last year’s Fringe Festival, brings a JEWEL in Canadian literature to the stage.  Anne of Green Gables tells the story of an extraordinary orphan girl, adopted by a brother and sister living in a quaint community in Prince Edward Island. The adoption brings openness to the hearts and minds of all who come to feel Anne’s expansive love and her thirst for more knowledge. Full of humor and pathos, Anne is a brilliant story for ages 9 and up.

Once Upon a Shoe:

image (7)Once Upon a Shoe or the Rhymes and Mimes of Mother Goose and her Traveling Troubadours (a children’s show with music) by Joseph Robinette. ‘Mother Goose sadly announces to her children that they must leave their home, a large comfortable shoe, and move to an old sneaker across the street. Her nursery rhyme and fairytale friends decide to put on a show to save her home.’

Directed by Alyson Connolly and Elaine Dunbar of Dramatic Learning.
