Script Salon, June 9
Once again, this June we feature new short plays for Young Audiences, brought to us by Jan Taylor and Kompany Family Theatre. These will be fun! And once again, the fabulous Nick Samoil joins us, this time on stage as music and sound director for the three pieces.
Directed by Jan Taylor, with Music/Sound by Nick Samoil, and read by Alex D. Mackie, Eric Pinkerton, Laura Raboud, Morgan Donald and Rain Matkin-Szilagyi.
Hatch, by Andrea Ritter
This is Andrea’s third play for Young Audiences and was developed in the Kompany New Work’s for Young Audiences Programme in 2017. Her first play, Woof and Other Tales of Abigail’s, was recently produced by Kompany Family Theatre in Fall 2018. As an elementary school teacher and mother of a Sassy eight-year-old, she loves the messages and possibilities that TYA can bring to its audience.
Birds of Paradise, by Heather Morrow
Heather has been hooked on writing plays since she saw her first one at five and said “I can do that!” Her plays have been performed at the Edmonton, Calgary, and Edinburgh Fringes, the Walterdale, and StageStruck. This is her second TYA play, after Mischief in Fez with Calgary Young People’s Theatre. Birds of Paradise was developed in Kompany’s New Works for Young Audiences Programme in 2012. Heather’s past work at Script Salon includes The Ugly Princess and shorts My Boyfriend’s Cat and Pure Oxygen.
Maggie’s Wish, by Jennifer Peebles
After years of facilitating devised theatre creations with youth for multiple organizations, Jennifer finally got up the courage to try playwriting her own. She has participated in two of Kompany Family Theatre’s New Works Programme and enjoys imagining the fantastical that can happen with children’s theatre. Maggie’s Wish was developed in Kompany’s New Works for Young Audiences Programme in 2017.
Kompany Family Theatre is a not-for-profit, Edmonton-based professional theatre company dedicated to producing quality theatre for young audiences and families, as well as the creation and development of new works. Kompany Family Theatre’s New Works for Young Audience programme encourages playwrights & writers, emerging & established to write for families and young audiences. Over the past 10 years, 36 playwrights have participated under the skilled guidance of dramaturges, Kim McCaw, Stephen Heatley, Tracy Carroll and Conni Massing. Many have gone on to professional production. A unique component of Kompany’s New Works Programme is that scripts are creatively workshopped using professional actors, directors, designers and composers in schools so that playwrights can see firsthand the impact of their plays on their target audience.
