Passiontide: Heinrich Schütz’s St. John Passion

In the middle of the Lenten season, Passiontide reflects on Christ’s journey to the cross, and the universal themes of sorrow and betrayal, as we hope for Easter. Featured works are Schütz’s rarely performed early Baroque masterpiece, his setting of the St. John Passion; and the lush, Romantic Quatre motets pour un temps de pénitence by Francis Poulenc.

The audience is invited to bring donations for Edmonton’s Food Bank – in contrast to the somber Passion story, a reminder that humans are capable of love, compassion, and justice.
