Music for Brass Celebrates Epiphany
Music for Brass Celebrates Epiphany
Chamber music old & new (C’mon) will present Journey of the Magi: music and poetry of the season, a program of music for brass quintet devoted to the Christmas story of the three wise men. Two performances will take place, on Sunday, December 28, 7:30 pm at St Faith & St Stephen the Martyr, Anglican Church in Edmonton’s Alberta Avenue neighbourhood and Saturday January 3, 7:30 pm at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Old Strathcona.
The centrepiece of each performance is contemporary American composer John Harbison’s Christmas Vespers, a dramatic and evocative work for brass with narrator that conveys the awe and mystery of events surrounding the birth of Christ. The program will include arrangements of familiar and lesser known carols from around the world, interspersed with readings of seasonal poetry and a singalong for the audience.
The performers are Russell Whitehead and Brian Sand trumpets, Mary Fearon horn, Kathryn Macintosh trombone and Scott Whetham tuba, who all play regularly with the Edmonton Symphony. They will be joined by Gordon Drever narrator.
Admission to each performance is by donation. St Faith & St Stephen the Martyr Anglican Church is at 11725 93 Street and Holy Trinity Anglican Church is at 10037 84 Avenue.
